Why I Build A Waterproof Laundry Floor System
The laundry room drain is one of the most overlooked rough-in details in residential construction.
The Insight
I create a waterproofed tile zone beneath the laundry machines, sloped toward a floor drain built directly into the floor system itself. The drain location, waterproofing, and rough plumbing are all planned before the room is finished — not adapted after the appliances arrive.
Why It Matters
Washing machine leaks are more common than most people realize. A properly designed floor drain gives that water somewhere intentional to go before it spreads into the finished home. It's a relatively small decision during construction that can prevent a major problem later.
