Why I Spray Foam Beneath Basement Slabs

The Insight

I use 2 lb closed-cell spray foam beneath basement slabs, over the footing, and up the foundation walls to create one continuous thermal barrier beneath the home. Rather than treating the slab, footing, and walls as separate systems, the insulation is connected as one assembly.

Why It Matters

Most basements lose heat at the transition between the slab and foundation wall. By tying the under-slab insulation continuously into the foundation walls, we reduce thermal bridging, improve comfort, and create a more stable basement environment year-round. The system is also simpler and more thorough than layering multiple materials together. The 2 lb closed-cell spray foam acts as insulation, an air barrier, and a vapor barrier in one continuous application — while also serving as an effective radon barrier beneath the slab.
